kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty

kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are the way to treat the osteoporotic compression fractures in the dorso lumbar spine. these fractures result in the elderly age group and lead to progressive bending of the spine and stooping posture.
in vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty bone cement is injected in the vertebrae without cutting the skin . this leads to good pain relief.

disc replacement in cervical spine

spine surgery has gone a long way . the recent advances in spine surgery include the disc replacement.
cervical disc prolapse is a major problem.
the symptoms include sever neck pain, radiating and shooting pain in the arms.
a vast majority of them will gradually settle with time and with nerve tranquilising medicines.
the remaing patients in which the pain is persisting, will need surgery. the traditional surgery has been discectomy with spinal fusion but the problems of fusion are many fold which include, limitation of movement and adjacent segment degeneration.

gradually this lead to think of nonfusion technology.
cervical disc replacement is one such non fusion technology.
the disc space is replaced with a prosthesiscalled the artificial disc which functions like any other joint replacement. it has metal on one side and poly on the other side. this essentilally is an uncemented prosthesis.
normally a soft cervical collar has to be used for around six weeks after surgery.
